A Study on Evaluation of Work Ability and Job Stress for Doctor

Abstract: Work ability and job stress have become the important issues in Korea workplace recently. This study researched work ability and job stress and analyzed correlation with work ability and job stress using the Work Ability Index(WAI) and the Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire against 152 doctors. As S. Korea is becoming an "aged society", workers in the country would be exposed to higher risk of workplace injuries due to their reducing work abilities as they are getting old. To identify the relationship between the work ability and the incident rate of workplace injuries, the work ability index (WAI) scores were surveyed from 409 workers occupied in different manufacturing industries reside on north GyoengBuk area. The workplace injury statistics in the year of 2010 for the corresponding industries were analyzed and summarized with the WAI scores by age groups, years of service, and sizes of business.The results showed the WAI scores of the workers occupied in the higher risk of workplace injury was lower than that of the workers of the lower risk. It means the lower the WAI score, the higher the chance of being injured during the task. It is concluded that appropriate correlation exists between the WAI scores of workers and the incident rate of workplace injury. It is recommended to administrate individual work abilities of aged workers in order to keep low rate of workplace injuries in upcoming aged and highly aged society.

O b j e c t i v e and Background:The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of individual characteristics, work-related factors, lifestyle factors, and health problems with work ability among aging workers in Korea. Method:In this cross-sectional survey, the study population consisted of 1,594 workers who had participated in a voluntary health promotion center and private workplace. Participants completed the work ability index. Results:The mean WAI score was 37.4, while the mean age of the sample was 43.25. In the age group over 50 showed 36.26. The majority of participants rated their work ability as 'good' to 'excellent', one-third moderate and about 7.5% poor. Work ability decreased significantly with age among the men. The younger group had higher scores on the work ability index than the age group over 50, except for mental resources. By work characteristics, work ability was analyzed to be the lowest in the case of work handling heavy stuff. Lastly, as a result of health factors analysis, the good management and retention of current health status can be the measure helpful to the improvement of work ability. Conclusion and Application:According to the results, it can be a basic principle to devise and enforce preventive measures on the factors for which improvement or action is possible, together with workplace-level systematic approach, in order to improve work ability. For such measures to be realized, it is necessary to check trends in change for several years.

The success of construction projects is heavily dependent on the work ability of the field managers who manage the execution of projects. The work ability of field managers is influenced by various elements such as job stress and individual characteristics. The purpose of this study is to reveal the factors influencing the work ability of construction field managers in Korea. Work ability is evaluated bases on the Work Ability Index(WAI) developed by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, while job stress is measured using the Korean Occupational Stress Questionnaire Short Form developed by the Korean Occupational Safety & Health Agency. The results showed that field managers under higher job stress have lower work abilities. In addition, it is revealed that exercise or religious practice have a positive influence on work ability. This study will help to increase the work ability and enable the efficient management of organization at building construction sites.
