A study on the impact of water quality on the murrel fishChanna striataandChanna punctatafrom three major Southern Tamilnadu rivers, India

Abstract: The impact of heavy metal accumulation in two important murrel fish species,Channa striataandChanna punctata, was analysed using micronuclei and histology assays.

“…BCF was used to quantify the metal concentrations in fish organs/tissues relative to the concentration in a river (Javed and Usmani 2013). The bioaccumulation of heavy metals by fish occurs when there are extremely high concentrations of metals in the environment, primarily via the gills during ion exchange and then by ingestion of food or sedimentary particles through diet (Kuppu et al 2018).…”

“…Metal toxicity can cause a serious reduction in the production of chlorophyll a due to its adverse effects on protein construction. C. vulgaris pigment content decreased in exposing to supermagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 ) in a range of concentrations from 12.5 to 400 µg ml −1 [39]. Pigment content of microalgae can be used as a reliable biomarker in investigating the health status of the organism, and in whole, community and ecosystem.…”

“…Digested material was diluted with de-ionized water, and Fe 3 O 4 concentrations were detected using ame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Model 67OG, USA). Bioconcentration factor (BCF) was calculated using equation 1 as suggested by Kuppu et al ( 2018).…”

“…The striped snakehead Channa striata, locally known as haluan in Lake Mainit is considered as an invasive alien species (IAS) in most countries and is one of the most abundant fishes in the lake, next to G. giuris and O. niloticus that are sought after and sold predominantly in the local markets of Lake Mainit. The trophic preference of C. striata as a carnivore (preferring fish and non-arthropod insects) explains its tendency to bioaccumulate mercury and other metals in many freshwater studies [20,21].…”
