A study on wrinkling characteristics and dynamic mechanical behavior of membrane

Abstract: An eigenvalue method considering the membrane vibration of wrinkling out-of-plane deformation is introduced, and the stress distributing rule in membrane wrinkled area is analyzed. A dynamic analytical model of rectangular shear wrinkled membrane and its numerical analysis approach are also developed. Results indicate that the stress in wrinkled area is not uniform, i.e. it is larger in wrinkling wave peaks along wrinkles and two ends of wrinkle in vertical direction. Vibration modes of wrinkled membrane are s… Show more

“…An MTS model 42 table-top microtensile testing system with 50N (sensitivity: 0.01N) and 2KN (sensitivity: 0.5N) load cells was used to conduct the quasistatic tensile tests for simply supported rectangular thin films. 1,14,15 A high-speed camera (Basler piA640-210gm) with 100 photos/second (max. 210 photos/second at resolution ratio 640 脳 480 dpi) was adopted to monitor the whole process of wrinkling from nonlinearly elastic, plastic behavior to final failure.…”

“…Pre-wrinkled conductive films have been used in micro-scaled modern technology in large-area electronics, capacitors, and polymer actuators, 7,8 and in medical surgery involved in treating wrinkling skin cases. 9 In addition to skin aging and wound healing, thin film wrinkling can be found in other fields such as semiconductor technology, 10 sandwich structure failure as face wrinkling, 11 stretchable connectors, 12 topographic matrices for cell alignment in bioengineering, metrology of material properties, 13,14 stretched thin sheets, [15][16][17][18][19] sheet metal forming and patterning, and topographical surface structuring. [20][21][22][23] From the numerous literature survey some related references are illustrated for example.…”

“…The other one is the experiment method based on the non-contact measurement technique. At present, the wrinkling experimental measurement is mainly to gain the wrinkling configuration, such as laser scanning method [5], fringe projection method [6], photogrammetry method [7][8][9]. However, these methods can not acquire the strain state for large high precision membrane structures.…”

“…After being wrinkled, a membrane almost loses the (in-plane) stiffness and stress (which is negative with a very small magnitude) in the direction perpendicular to wrinkles and undergoes a great change in its configuration and stress state. As it obtains the resistance to out-of-plane deformation mainly from tensile stress, wrinkling deformation can reduce the out-of-plane stiffness and play an important role in its dynamic behavior (Li et al , 2012).…”
