A Survey of Eastern Arcadia in Prehistory

Abstract

The material for the present study was collected during 1963 and 1964, on various expeditions to eastern Arcadia. My original intention was to survey the whole province with regard to its prehistoric occupation; this, however, proved too great a task in the time available, and I was able to cover little more than the highland plains around the Classical cities of Tegea, Mantinea, and Orchomenos. The following work will therefore be mainly concerned with that area, which constitutes eastern Arcadia, although I have also listed the evidence for prehistoric habitation over the remainder of the province as well. I have taken the province to cover the area as described by Pausanias, rather than the present-day administrative unit. This is not an exhaustive survey, even of the area most intensively covered; rather it should be seen as a preliminary work, which will, it is hoped, stimulate interest in further field-work and perhaps excavation in this neglected area of the Peloponnese.

In search of Pleistocene remains at the Gates of Europe: Directed surface survey of the Megalopolis Basin (Greece)

“…Notwithstanding the long tradition of prehistoric research over the past 50 years in the region of Arcadia, Peloponnese (Howell 1970;Lloyd et al 1985;Roy et al 1992;Tausend 1999;Voyatzis 2014 &, only two surveys inspected Pleistocene sediments: the Asea Valley Survey, which identified scant isolated Middle and Upper Paleolithic lithic scatters on red Pleistocene sediments close to the Alfeios River (Carter 2003;; and the survey conducted by Darlas (2003), who reported lithics associated with an elephant rib in a naturally exposed section of fluvial gravels from the Apiditsa Formation (Fm) in the foothills of the basin, near the palaeontological finds of Skouphos (1905) at Agios Ioannis. Beyond these isolated instances, systematic research of the Megalopolis Basin has been limited to palaeontological and palaeo-environmental studies that focused their efforts on exploring the thick lignite seams of the active open cast mine of Megalopolis (Vinken 1965;van Vugt et al 2000;Okuda et al 2002;Siavalas et al 2009).…”
