A Survey of Epithelial Odontogenic Tumors and Cysts in Dogs and Cats

Abstract: Abstract.A retrospective histologic study of 12 canine and eight feline epithelial odontogenic tumors and cysts was conducted from oral masses (n = 3,9 17) obtained between 1980 and 1990. No sex or breed predilection was identified. Ameloblastoma was observed in two dogs (case Nos. 1, 2) 6 and 8 months of age. Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors were seen in a dog (case No. 3) and in two cats (case Nos. 4, 5) between 8 and 16 years of age. Ameloblastic fibroma (or fibroameloblastoma) was observed in cat… Show more

“…Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is rare in animals and characterized by epithelial proliferation, mineralization in the epithelium and stroma, and deposition of amyloid or amyloid-like materials [1,[4][5][6][7][8]. This note is to report histopathology and immunohistochemistry of CEOT in a Shih-Tzu dog.…”

“…Odontogenic tumors, including epithelial odontogenic tumors are rare in animals [5,[8][9][10]12]. Only two reference cases of ameloblasoma in rabbits have been submitted to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Wednesday Slide Conference, Case I-388 (AFIP 2578783) and Case II-97N172 (AFIP 2638859).…”

“…The main subtypes are follicular, plexiform, acanthomatous, basal cell, and granular cell types [6,10]. Follicular ameloblastomas typically consist of epithelial islands with a peripheral palisaded cell layer surrounding a central stellate reticulum area, whereas the tumour epithelium in the plexiform type is arranged in irregular masses or anastomosing cords.…”

“…1 Types of odontogenic cysts reported in dogs include radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, and keratocysts. 2,4,8,10,12 In contrast to other odontogenic cysts, radicular cysts are associated with an inflammatory infiltrate. 6 They are also very often found in association with a devitalized tooth.…”
