A synopsis of feral Agave and Furcraea (Agavaceae, Asparagaceae s. lat.) in the Canary Islands (Spain)

Abstract: Background – Species of Agave and Furcraea (Agavaceae, Asparagaceae s. lat.) are widely cultivated as ornamentals in Mediterranean climates. An increasing number is escaping and naturalising, also in natural habitats in the Canary Islands (Spain). However, a detailed treatment of variously naturalised and invasive species found in the wild in the Canary Islands is not available and, as a result, species identification is often problematic. Methods – The present study is based on many years of fieldwork on the i… Show more

“…Also, agaves are important ornamental plants worldwide and have been cultivated in different parts of the world for the production of fibers and drinks (Stewart, 2015). They are also considered to be potentially invasive in areas of South Africa, in the Mediterranean basin, and in other semiarid lands (Badano and Pugnaire, 2004; Henderson, 2007; Walters et al, 2011; Iamonico and Rojas‐Sandoval, 2016; Verloove et al, 2019).…”

“…Several authors report the importance of this variable for the establishment of fique crops. The appropriate altitude is between 1300 and 2800 m.a.s.l., according to Verloove et al (2019). Montero and Adams (1964) indicate between 1000 and 2000 m.a.s.l., in other words "temperate climates", between 1300 and 2000 m.a.s.l.…”

“…These migration and trade circumstances have produced concentrated migration that likely explains the high rates of invasion by alien plant species from Central and South America, mainly for agricultural and horticultural purposes (e.g. González, 2008; Verloove et al, 2019). All these historical changes in networks of human migration and commerce from and to the Canarian archipelago exemplify the need for revisiting the original ‘Imperialist Dogma’ hypothesis (Crosby, 2004; Di Castri, 1989; Di Castri et al, 1990), in order to accommodate the emerging patterns and challenges arising from accelerating rates of global change associated with increasing human trade and transport.…”
