“…The findings here reported revealed among the medwakh smoker group an increased level of metabolites linked with inflammatory mechanism, such as pyroglutamic acid 23 , 24 , deoxyguanosine 25 and anserine 26 . In order to investigate futher an eventual association of metwakh smoking and inflammation, we decided to measure CRP, a widely known clinical indicator of inflammatory conditions 27 , 28 . The levels of salivary CRP were first examined among 10 participants as a pilot study from each group of smokers and compared with non-smokers.…”

“…Tobacco smoke induced salivary oxidant generation causes morphological changes in the parenchyma of the salivary glands, decreased salivary secretion that contributes to biochemical alterations in the saliva 33 increased inflammation 35 , changed protein carbonyls, and reduced enzyme activities 36 . The increased salivary CRP at levels reported in previous studies 28 , 37 may serve as a plausible indicator of the inflammatory status of the medwakh smokers since we have excluded the effects of reported periodontal diseases among the study subjects as described in the exclusion criteria. Elevated levels of salivary CRP, a powerful biomarker of oral inflammation, may be a consequence of an oxidative burst caused by medwakh smoking.…”

“…Given its role in many different clinical conditions, it is emerging as a new diagnostic and prognostic marker [ [29] , [30] , [31] ]. In recent studies, serum and salivary galectin levels were measured using ELISA [ 31 , 32 ], and a significant correlation between the serum and saliva in terms of various biomarker levels was reported [ 33 ]. Similarly, there was no significant difference between the saliva and GCF for different galectin levels or the various inflammation markers investigated [ 34 , 35 ].…”

“…Other researchers have also used saliva samples to identify fibrinogen fragment D, complement component C3c, and cystatin SA as putative biomarkers for the screening and diagnosis of OLP (73). In the recent literature, researchers (74,75) first concluded that there is an association between serum/saliva levels of multiple pro-inflammatory cytokines and OLP pathogenesis, and then suggested the use of saliva and serum C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the assessment of OLP development.…”
