A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies of reactivity to digital in-the-moment measurement of health behaviour

Abstract: Self-report measures of health behaviour have several limitations including measurement reactivity, i.e. changes in people’s behaviour, cognitions or emotions due to taking part in research. It is thus often recommended to use objective digital measurements instead; however, it is unclear whether they also induce reactivity. Therefore, this pre-registered systematic review and meta-analysis synthesised 31 studies, including 7 experimental studies with 18 effects. Most studies investigated reactivity to digital… Show more

“…Second, although our review provided an overview of theoretical and methodological aspects of EMA studies, we did not attempt to quantify potential reactivity effects (i.e., whether repeatedly responding to EMAs may lead to behaviour change) (Wilding et al, 2016 ). However, this has been explicitly studied in extant EMA reviews (König, Allmeta, et al, 2021 ).…”

“…The third United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for different age groups (Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, 2015). Health behaviour manifests as a behavioural pattern that comprises appropriate actions or habits employed to maintain, restore, or improve health (König et al, 2022). Nonetheless, improving health behaviour would be challenging for certain individuals owing to the alterations in daily routines to allocate time for exercise (Kaewkannate & Kim, 2016).…”
