A systematic review of the effectiveness of brief psychological therapies in primary health care.

Abstract: specialist psychotherapy colleagues (with the obvious exception of integrative psychotherapists!). However the theory and techniques underpinning the many different models of counselling are the same as that of the equivalent psychotherapy. Because of this the literature review combines studies that have involved psychotherapists as well as counsellors, and for the sake of clarity psychotherapy and counselling have been used interchangeably.

“…Program efficacy research, for the purpose of this study, is defined as research that has occurred in a ''controlled'' environment or best case scenario and utilizes treatment or interventions that are regulated by adherence to a set curriculum (Laurenceau et al, 2004;Hemmings, 2000). Specifically, we sought to evaluate the immediate effects of a premarital educational program, but did not seek to explore the long term effects of attending an intervention on later marital quality (Carroll & Doherty, 2003).…”

“…Bower and Rowland () undertook a review for the Cochrane Collaboration that aimed to assess the efficacy and cost‐effectiveness of counselling in primary care by reviewing outcome data in eight RCTs published before June 2005 for patients with psychological and psychosocial problems considered suitable for counselling. Hemmings () sought to evaluate the effects of counselling in primary care, taking on board evidence from both RCTs and more naturalistic counselling service evaluations on studies undertaken between 1975 and 1998. Van Schaik et al () reviewed studies of patient preferences.…”

“…Numerous descriptive, uncontrolled studies suggest that counselling is popular among patients, who often report improvements in well-being with the therapy 11–15. By contrast, there are relatively few formal randomised controlled trials on how the effectiveness of counselling compares with that of usual GP care.…”
