A Systematic Review of Visualization Techniques and Analysis Tools for Eye-Tracking in 3D Environments

Abstract: This systematic literature review presents an update on developments in 3D visualization techniques and analysis tools for eye movement data in 3D environments. With the introduction of affordable and non-intrusive eye-tracking solutions to the mass market, access to users' gaze is now increasingly possible. As a result, the adoption of eye-tracking in virtual environments using head-mounted displays is expected to increase since the trend is to incorporate gaze tracking as part of new technical solutions. The… Show more

“…Sundstedt and Garro [SG22] provide a systematic literature review in which they discuss state‐of‐the‐art visualization techniques for gaze data in 3D environments. The presented literature mainly focuses on visualizing the gaze directly onto the 3D Model using point‐based techniques or heatmaps.…”

“…We see the main advantage of our work in the latter three scenarios, as they can be especially supported by interpreting the viewing behavior and movement of the participants. “…The interest of using eye tracking for AR scenarios increased in recent years, partially due to the availability of the technique in current hardware generations. As an example, there are multiple approaches presenting heat maps and trajectories in a 3D context [SG22]. Although this is valuable information about gaze distributions in general, a comparison between many participants is hard to achieve this way.…”
