SMART Recovery groups are cognitive-behaviorally oriented mutual support groups for individuals with addictions. The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which the quality of group facilitation, group cohesion and the use of between session homework activities contribute to self-rated use of cognitive-behavioral skills amongst group participants. Participants attending SMART Recovery groups in Australia completed a cross sectional survey (N=124). The survey included measures of cognitive and behavioral skill utilization, group cohesion, quality of group facilitation and a rating of how frequently participants leave group meetings with an achievable between session homework plan. On average, participants had been attending SMART Recovery meetings for 9 months. Participants were most likely to attend SMART Recovery for problematic alcohol use. Regression analyses indicated that group cohesion significantly predicted use of cognitive restructuring, but that only provision of homework at the end of each group session predicted self-reported behavioral activation. Both group cohesion and leaving a group with an achievable homework plan predicted participant use of cognitive behavioral skills. The concrete actions associated with homework activities may facilitate behavioral activation. There is a need for longitudinal research to examine the relationship between the utilization of cognitive and behavioral skills and participant outcomes (e.g. substance use, mental health) for people attending SMART Recovery groups.

Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever o perfil e caracterizar o atendimento a mulheres com transtornos mentais pela Estratégia de Saúde da Família (ESF). Método: Estudo de abordagem qualitativa, realizado através da análise de prontuários de atendimentos de pacientes pertencentes à ESF da cidade de Divinópolis/MG, entre outubro de 2014 a março de 2015. Resultados/Discussão: Todas as pacientes faziam uso de algum tipo de medicamento para tratamento de morbidade clínica ou psiquiátrica, sendo a classe de ansiolíticos e antidepressivos os mais prescritos. Todas as mulheres foram atendidas na Atenção Básica, sendo o atendimento de livre demanda mais frequente que o atendimento agendado. Apesar de, a Atenção Básica ser a principal forma de entrada na rede de saúde, a continuidade do cuidado a essas pacientes não ficou evidenciado. Considerações finais: Existe a necessidade da criação de estratégias mais específicas, que visam promover a continuidade do acompanhamento e tratamento dos pacientes.

Objective: Our goal was to develop and pilot a methodology that could reliably identify therapeutic homework tasks that are coherent with the goals of individuals receiving mental health recovery support. Method: The content of goals and therapeutic homework tasks of 66 clients were classified using the Camberwell Assessment of Need Goal-Action Plan (CAN-GAP) taxonomy. Goal-homework pairs were considered coherent if the content of the homework and goal were both independently assigned the same content domain. Results: The content of the goals and homework tasks were found to be highly coherent, with a 75% match in categories. Conclusions and Implications for Practice: It is possible to simply, and reliably, determine whether the content of goals and homework tasks are coherent. Lower coherence would require support workers to spend more time making the connection between homework and goals more explicit. Future research should determine whether higher coherence leads to greater goal attainment. Impact and ImplicationsThis study is the first to our knowledge that explores both recovery-oriented goals and betweensession homework tasks together. It presents a new methodology, derived from the goal content classification literature, to explore how goals and homework tasks of individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) cohere. The key finding of this work is that it is possible to reliably and simply identify coherent goal and homework tasks from clients' written records of their goals and homework tasks. This has significant practical implications for organizations and researchers seeking to determine whether support workers are helping clients develop homework tasks consistent with their goals.
