RESUMELa Commission geologique de l'Ontario (CGO) realise la production d'une nouvelle compilation geologique de la Ceinture de roche verte de I 'Abitibi en Ontario, en incorporant non seulement les sources conventionnelles d'information geologique mais aussi d'autres sources de donnees telles que les donnees de teledetection incluant les images RADARSAT. Plusieurs de ces images de I 'Abitibi ont ete acquises par la CGO dans le cadre du projet ADRO 662. La perspective geologique utilisee pour evaluer ces images etait de nature subjective et se confinait it, l'identification et it, la delimitation des zones d'affleurement, des structures de plissement, des failles et des lineaments. Cinq formes geologiques dominantes de la zone d'etude ont ete analysees en detail it, l'aide de trois scenes RADARSAT avec des angles d'incidence variables et des resolutions differentes-Fl, S1 et S7. Pour comparer l'utilite des differentes images RADARSAT, d'autres ensembles de donnees vectorielles et matricielles ont ete integres it, I' etude, incluant la geologie du substratum, des donnees radar aeroporte, des donnees aeromagnetiques, un modele numerique d'altitude (MNA) et une image Thematic Mapper de Landsat TM. Les images radar aeroporte et RADARSAT se sont averees une excellente source d'information pour la visualisation des conditions du terrain et du relief et pour I 'interpretation geologique d'un secteur, particulierement lorsque la topographie est importante. L'etude a aussi permis de confirmer l'importance des parametres "lies au capteur" pour mettre en relief les caracteristiques geologiques -les plus importants de ces parametres etant la direction de visee, l'angle d'incidence et la resolution. 1l a aussi ete possible de demontrer l'importance de proceder it, unfiltrage approprie des images radar afin de maximiser I 'information geologique. En ordre decroissant d'importance, les images les plus utiles pour la delimitation des cretes d'affleurements, des unites etlou formations lithologiques, des structures de plissement, des failles et des lineaments dans notre zone d'etude caracteristique du Bouclier precambrien, sont les suivantes: • les donnees radar aeroporte • le modele numerique d'altitude • I 'image RADARSAT S1 • I 'image RADARSAT F1 • I 'image RADARSAT S7 • l'image Landsat TM En plus d'effectuer une comparaison individuelle, des themes selectionnes ont ete integres it, I 'aide de differentes techniques d'integration des donnees et evalues pour mesurer leur efficacite du point de vue geologique. Dans cette etude, les images radar aeroporte et RADARSAT S1 ont ete combinees aux donnees aeromagnetiques. Les ensembles de donnees integrees ont fourni l'information geologique la plus detaillee de la region -la synergie des donnees apportant plus d'information geologique que la simple somme des ensembles individuels de donnees. Past emission of metal-bearing particulate matter, sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ), and sulphuric acid by base metal smelters in the Sudbury region led to widespread loss of vegetation, contamination of soils, and formation of black coatings on rock surfaces. These black coatings formed through the incorporation of smelter-borne particulate matter into the partly dissolved uppermost layers of siliceous minerals on exposed rock, and are characterized by high heavy-metal content. This study involved assessment of the reflectance properties of black coatings in the Sudbury region, and determination of the geographic distribution of coatings through supervised classification of reflectance data derived from a Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image. Classifications involved the use of the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), Maximum Likelihood, and Feedforward Backpropagation Neural Network algorithms. The reflectance spectra of black coatings in the Sudbury region are relatively flat and featureless, and are characterized by reflectance values less than~13% across the visible, nearinfrared, and short-wave infrared. Spectral properties are similar to those of magnetite, a spinel-group mineral known to be present in Sudbury coatings. The presence of carbon-rich soot particles may be an important influence on the reflectance properties of coatings. SAM classification results are characterized by the widespread mislabelling of uncoated urban and open-pit sites as mantled by black coatings, and neural network results problematically mislabel some uncoated wetland sites as coated. Results generated by the Maximum Likelihood algorithm most usefully depict the distribution of exposed black coatings in the Sudbury region. The mapping of black coatings using remote-sensing methods can provide useful information on the spatial character of environmental degradation in the vicinity of smelters, and should be helpful in the monitoring of environmental recovery where emissions have been reduced or eliminated.
