A Temperature Sensor Based on a Polymer Optical Fiber Macro-Bend

Abstract: The design and development of a plastic optical fiber (POF) macrobend temperature sensor is presented. The sensor has a linear response versus temperature at a fixed bend radius, with a sensitivity of 1.92·10−3 (°C)−1. The sensor system used a dummy fiber-optic sensor for reference purposes having a resolution below 0.3 °C. A comprehensive experimental analysis was carried out to provide insight into the effect of different surrounding media on practical macro-bend POF sensor implementation. Experimental resul… Show more

“…A common compensation technique is based on a reference fiber that remains on a static position during the measurement. For this purpose, Bilro et al (2011) and Moraleda et al (2013) proposed the use of a reference fiber in the same direction of the POF sensor. Such solution may not be suitable for wearable applications, since this reference fiber may move or bend with the POF sensor, presenting signal attenuations that could result in measurement errors.…”

“…Nevertheless, the reference fiber signal has low intensity due to reflection losses. Bilro et al (2011) and Moraleda et al (2013) employed a self-referencing system, which lowers the source power deviations to acceptable values. This system comprises of a sensor fiber and a reference fiber with the same properties as the sensor fiber in a static position.…”

“…In fact, high signal attenuation limits the polymeric optical fiber (POF) applications to short distance communication, compact light sources and optical sensors [5,6]. There are reported numerous constructions of POFs based optical sensors for liquids and gasses monitoring [7][8][9][10]. In addition, the possibility of incorporation of luminescent dopants significantly extends the application field of optical fiber devices [11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…Temperature amplitude modulation sensors are based on optical power variations. Some proposed sensors are based on frustration of total internal reflection [4], light generation [5] and Fiber Bragg Grating wavelengths shifts [6]. The amplitude temperature sensors usually are cheaper than the phase modulation sensors but they need to use a reference technique to avoid false readings caused by fluctuations of the light source or other undesired losses [7].…”

“…The sensor system used a relation between two different wavelengths to avoid possible errors related to optical power fluctuations of the light. Previous POF macrobend temperature sensor as the one reported in [4] used a dummy fiber-optic sensor, making them less reproducible.…”
