“…Meta‐analyses have shown that: (a) older drinkers are more vulnerable than are younger ones to negative sequelae of alcohol use, including deleterious effects on organ systems (e.g., gastritis, hypertension, cardiac dysrhythmia, cardiomopathy, stroke, osteoporosis, several cancers, and liver and renal disease); (b) mixing alcohol with prescription drugs or OTC drugs can potentiate, prolong, or inhibit drug responses; and (c) age‐related changes in decreased body water‐to‐muscle and fat ratio and reduced physiological tolerance for alcohol result in higher risks for auto crashes, falls, fires, and psychological problems such as acute confusion, dementia, depression, or suicide (Corrao, Bagnardi, Zambon, & Arico, 1999; Corrao, Bagnardi, Zambon, & LaVecchia, 2004; Waern, Spak, & Sundh, 2002). Evidence also has shown that even low volume of alcohol consumption has been linked with heart rate variability, cardiac arrhythmias, and potential risk of sudden cardiac death (Masters & Stevenson, 2003; Masters, Stevenson, & Schaal, 2004).…”
