A thermal maturity map based on vitrinite reflectance of British coals

Abstract: A compilation of new and previously published vitrinite reflectance (R 0 ) data from Carboniferous coals constitutes the most comprehensive map of reflectance across Great Britain. Values of R 0 range from 0.38 to 3.29%, recording an ambient thermal maturity in the early oil window (standard reference point for reflectance studies), modified by elevated heat flow in northern England and along the Variscan orogenic front. The map provides a context for other geological datasets.

“…Currently, the problems of oil and gas bearing potential of foredeeps are relevant all over the world [1,4,5]. The studies of petroleum source rocks, assessment of their generation potential, transformation of organic matter (OM), characteristics of the lithological-facies features of petroleum source rocks and enclosing strata are carried out.…”

“…The studies of petroleum source rocks, assessment of their generation potential, transformation of organic matter (OM), characteristics of the lithological-facies features of petroleum source rocks and enclosing strata are carried out. Trough zones of fold-thrust areas in various regions of the world (Zagros fold system (Iran, Iraq), basins of Maturin (Venezuela), Chaco (Bolivia, Argentina), Llanos (Colombia), Tarim (China)) are among the largest areas in terms of oil and gas production [1,3,4].…”

“…The analysis of coals and dispersed organic matter (DOM) is an irreplaceable tool in thermal maturity assessment and environmental studies of sedimentary successions [1]. In thermal model calibration for petroleum exploration and basin analysis, vitrinite reflectance is still the most accurate and reliable indicator [2][3][4][5]. On the other hand, vitrinite discrimination among different organic facies has always been a critical issue for a correct assessment of thermal maturity [6,7], in particular when other low reflecting macerals occur [8][9][10][11].…”

“…These aspects are relevant in fold and thrust belts characterised by the juxtaposition of rocks with a different thermal peak where both strike-slip and extensional tectonics can rework the thrust stack during the later stages of deformation. In such cases, organic parameters of the thermal evolution of sedimentary rocks are often used to obtain a tectonic loading produced by orogeny [15][16][17][18].…”
