A Tilt Sensor Node Embedding a Data-Fusion Algorithm for Vibration-Based SHM

Abstract: This work describes a miniaturized sensor network based on low-power, light-weight and small footprint microelectromechanical (MEMS) sensor nodes capable to simultaneously measure tri-axial accelerations and tri-axial angular velocities. A real-time data fusion algorithm based on complementary filters is applied to extract tilt angles. The resulting device is designed to show competitive performance over the whole frequency range of the inertial units. Besides the capability to provide accurate measurements bo… Show more

“…The measuring layer consists in a sensor network composed of low-power, light weight and small footprint accelerometer sensor nodes [9]. Each of them features an ST Microelectronics STM32F303 32bit, 3.3 V low-power microcontroller unit (MCU) embedding Digital Signal Processing (DSP) functionalities and a floating-point unit (FPU).…”

“…In structural assessments, a seismometer is generally used to detect acceleration, speed, or displacements depending on time, whose operation is based on sensors, amplifiers, and analog or digital recording instruments [6]. Typically, structural surveys are based on the use of accelerometers [7][8][9]. Under operation (or passive) modal analysis, it is assumed that the background noise is a white function.…”

“…Currently, most of the wireless sensors are powered by conventional batteries that are bulky and require regular replacement or recharging [10]. This is impractical or costly in many applications where sensors are widely distributed or in some inaccessible locations, such as enclosed machines or engines [11,12]. There are mainly two research streams in addressing this challenge, including energy harvesting [13,14,15,16] and wireless power transfer [17,18,19,20].…”
