A True AR Authoring Tool for Interactive Virtual Museums

Abstract: In this work, a new and innovative way of spatial computing that appeared recently in the bibliography called True Augmented Reality (AR), is employed in cultural heritage preservation. This innovation could be adapted by the Virtual Museums of the future to enhance the quality of experience. It emphasises, the fact that a visitor will not be able to tell, at a first glance, if the artefact that he/she is looking at is real or not and it is expected to draw the visitors' interest. True AR is not limited to art… Show more

“…Current work (e.g., Rau et al (2022); Geronikolakis et al (2020); Apaza-Yllachura et al ( 2019)) explores module-based authoring of AR applications and targets to lower the barriers to getting started with the development of AR applications. Recently, similar ideas are used the industry, for example, Power Apps by Microsoft, 2021) or the XRTY App, 2021).…”

“…However, their authoring tool does not support other anchors in the real world than marker images and only supports the interaction possibilities of handheld devices. Geronikolakis et al (2020) introduce their authoring tool called M.A.G.E.S. platform that allows generating gamified AR experiences for virtual exhibitions.…”

“…In conclusion, this paper opens the door to a more targeted multidisciplinary approach judiciously recruiting different forms of knowledge from the arts, the humanities and new digital technologies towards generating specific effects when it comes FIGURE 1 | Illustrating an AR virtual museum. “…As Schuemie et al observe in their survey of presence in virtual environments: "presence as discussed in literature related to immersive VR can most often be characterized by the concept of presence as transportation: people are usually considered "present" in an immersive VR when they report a sensation of being in the virtual world ("you are there")" (2001). The same immersive principles also apply in Augmented Reality (AR) environments where True AR elements blend the real with the virtual world (Geronikolakis et al, 2020).…”

“…One of the solutions suggested by Hinton et al is to leverage techniques from the information visualization domain to make online museums interactive, and exploratory access to cultural heritage data [37]. Researchers have leveraged techniques such as storytelling/narration [4] [30], augmented reality [34] [15], and virtual reality [5] [17] to make online museums interactive and more appealing to the users. Multiple visualization techniques such as usage of plots [2], clusters and sets [8], geographical maps [13] and networks [38] have also been utilized in the development of online museums.…”
