A user centered design approach for patient interfaces to a diabetes IT platform

Abstract: Abstract-Improving patient self-management can have a greater impact than improving any clinical treatment (WHO). We propose here a systematic and comprehensive user centered design approach for delivering a technological platform for diabetes disease management. The system was developed under the METABO research project framework, involving patients from 3 different clinical centers in Parma, Modena and Madrid.

“…Multiple studies aimed at developing DSSs to manage diabetes have been proposed since 2010. One of the most productive approaches is the METABO project [122][123][124][125][126][127]. This project involves monitoring and advanced features including tools to prevent future excursions, dynamically optimize care pathways, extract patterns via knowledge discovery, and guide weight loss programs.…”

“…The convergent use of AC and PTs as information and communications technologies in the field of health care highly increases the potential for the development of innovative clinical applications. Some typical examples of such potential are the solutions created by some EUfunded projects, such as those of PSYCHE (Valenza, Gentili, Lanatà, & Scilingo, 2013), MOTIVA (Domingo et al, 2011), METABO (Fico et al, 2011), and HeartCycle (Ottaviano et al, 2011;Reiter, Tesanovic, Martinez-Romero, 2013). The convergence of AC and PTs can open up additional possibilities for developing and implementing persuasive strategies.…”
