A wavelet packet based block-partitioning image coding algorithm with rate-distortion optimization

Abstract: As an elegant generalization of wavelet transform, wavelet packet (WP) provides an effective representation tool for adaptive waveform analysis. Recent work shows that image-coding methods based on WP decomposition can achieve significant gain over those based on a usual wavelet transform. However, most of the work adopts a tree-structured quantization scheme, which is a successful technique for wavelet image coding, but not appropriate for WP subbands. This paper presents an image-coding algorithm based on a … Show more

“…Then the approximations will be only decomposed consecutively. In contrast, wavelet packet decomposition decomposes not only the low frequency approximations but also the high frequency details, giving rise to better high frequency resolution [18][19][20][21]. So wavelet packet decomposition has finer, more complete time-frequency properties and can acquire more essential features of a signal than wavelet decomposition, thus guaranteeing that the proposed linear ridgelet network converges rapidly in the training phase and has good classification performance.…”

“…15 The algorithm (denoted as RDOH) uses the rate-distortion statistics of JPEG2000 where the EBCOT scheme uses it to find the optimal truncation points for the code-blocks. In addition to the use of the classical rate information, we also consider the JPEG2000 header data during the computation of the optimal subband structure (RDOH stands for "rate-distortion optimisation with headers").…”
