A web compliance engineering framework to support the development of accessible rich internet applications

Abstract: Web Compliance Engineering is a new field within Web Engineering that deals with the increasing complexity of Internet applications, the wide variety of mobile devices, the richer user interfaces coming out of Web 2.0 and the quality assurance processes for non-uniform policy environments worldwide. Considering these issues from the perspective of Web accessibility, the borders of its traditional components [6] are blurred as users become content providers. “…It uses Rich Internet Applications (RIAs), to perform, on web browsers, the same functions conventional desktop applications do [22]. They have the advantage of being easier to use, presenting information in a more proficient manner and being simple to maintain [11].…”

“…RIAs, in spite of their numerous benefits, represent a challenge to people using assistive technologies. They have several limitations: "the lack semantic cues, and metadata in HTML content, its re-purposing for formatting and presentation, the lack of keyboard access" [22]. Some of the solutions brought forward to minimise these difficulties are the use of added semantics, 'adaptive interfaces and navigation options' [8].…”

“…Some previous studies proposed a conceptual framework for designing and developing Web applications to improve accessibility and usability for people with disabilities [12], [17], [2]. Kouroupetroglou et al proposed a semantic Web application framework to favor cooperation and interaction between groups (ontology creators, annotators, developers and users) that collaboratively should work to enhance WWW accessibility [12].…”
