A Wide-Range Displacement Sensor Based on Plastic Fiber Macro-Bend Coupling

Abstract: This paper proposes the strategy of fabricating an all fiber wide-range displacement sensor based on the macro-bend coupling effect which causes power transmission between two twisted bending plastic optical fibers (POF), where the coupling power changes with the bending radius of the fibers. For the sensor, a structure of two twisted plastic fibers is designed with the experimental platform that we constructed. The influence of external temperature and displacement speed shifts are reported. The displacement … Show more

“…Detecting such small local displacements can assist in effectively preventing large-scale collapse accidents. For this reason, various techniques have been studied to measure the displacement of structures, such as using sensors inside structures, e.g., displacement gauges and clinometers [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], for short-period displacements, and using laser scanners [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ], total stations [ 17 ], the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) [ 17 , 18 , 19 ], and images [ 15 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ] for long-period displacements.…”

“…However, this type of sensor is complex in its fabrication. On the other hand, intensity modulated sensor has low fabrication complexity due to its simplest configuration, but has drawback in its sensitivity performance and can be easily influenced by intensity fluctuation of the laser source [11]- [13]. As for Mach-Zhender, Sagnac and Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors, the sensors have comparable sensitivity to wavelength modulated sensor with easier fabrication process and more stable compared to intensity modulated sensor [14]- [19].…”

“…For example, a reference POF is adopted in a refractive index sensor to remove the source power variation [ 18 ]. The dark field characteristics of a twisted macro-bend coupling structure (TMBCS) are used to improve the signal to noise ratio, which realizes the liquid level detection in [ 19 ] and displacement sensing in [ 20 ].…”
