A widely tunable single-longitudinal-mode ytterbium-doped fiber laser based on fiber Lyot filter

Abstract: A widely tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated, which is achieved by combining a fiber Lyot filter and a saturable absorber in a ring cavity. Stable SLM operation from 1045 nm to 1076 nm is obtained by properly adjusting the polarization state. The output power reaches 7.5 dBm with a fluctuation of less than 2 dB. The optical signal-to-noise ratio is 42.5 dB with a fluctuation of less than 6 dB in this wavelength range.

“…Figure 1(a) shows the filter in this experiment. In the experiment, the Sagnac-like loop is selected to replace the PMF in the traditional Lyot filter [21] to study the tunability performance under the action of PCs and PDI. In the experiment, a 2 m long PMF (PM1017-c 1550 FC/APC) and a 50:50 OC are selected to form a loop structure.…”

“…As detailed above, multi-wavelength EDFLs are typically realized by using a twin-core fiber [18], Sagnac loop [19], MZI, PCF, and complex structures. When only a single Sagnac loop was used, side modes were clearly observed and the lasing wavelength tuning scope was not wide enough.…”

“…Usually, the T-SFFLs contain two mainly functional portions: wavelength-tunability device and single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) lasing device. The former is the most essential element of a tunable fiber laser, such as fiber Bragg grating (FBG), 9,10) fiber Fabry-Pérot tunable filter (FFP-TF), 11,12) Lyot filter, 13,14) Sagnac loop, 15,16) and single-mode-multimode-single-mode fiber structure. 17,18) However, due to a small longitudinal mode spacing of the ring-cavity and large bandwidth of the tunable devices, other necessary optical components must be combined and employed in fiber laser for ensuring a stable SLM output.…”
