Abatement of Carbon Monoxide over CeO2–CoO x Catalysts: Effect of Preparation Method

Abstract: Four CeO 2 -CoO x catalysts (containing 20% ceria) were prepared by impregnation, precipitation-oxidation, co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods (IMP, PO, CP and HT, respectively). They were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmittance electron microscopy, N 2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction. The catalysts catalyzed CO oxidation in a continuous flow micro-reactor. These results demonstrate that the activity of CO oxidation d… Show more

“…The average particle size was around 80 nm, consistent with the XRD result in Fig. 1b [26,27] with clear lattice fringes corresponding to (1 1 1) and (2 2 0) planes of Co 3 O 4 (Fig. 2b).…”

“…Ceria was used as support of cobalt oxides127, 128 or as dopant of unsupported cobalt oxides 129–133. In several cases, cerium and cobalt precursors were introduced simultaneously to prepare mixed oxide catalysts.…”

“…To this end, precursors of the type (RO) n M-L-X-L'-M' are required in which M(OR) n is a metal alkoxide moiety, M' the second metal (metal ion or another metal alkoxide moiety), L and L' are the coordinating groups, and X is a chemically inert spacer. This synthetic route proved to be very efficient for silica-based mixed-metal oxides (i.e., M = Si), because a variety of alkoxysilanes (RO) 3 Si(CH 2 ) 3 L' with a coordinating group L' are available. [1] Preparation of mixed oxides of any two metallic elements by this approach is less straightforward, because bifunctional organic compounds L-X-L' with two different coordinating groups (L and L') are required that must selectively react with just one metal component.…”

“…The chosen system, namely, Co 3 O 4 -CeO 2 is an interesting CO, hydrocarbon, and diesel soot oxidation catalyst. [3] The high activity of Co 3 O 4 -CeO 2 catalysts is attributed to synergetic interactions between cobalt oxide and ceria, which modify the Ce 3 + /Ce 4 + and Co 2 + /Co 3 + redox cycles and increase oxygen mobility as a result. This renders more oxygen available for the oxidation processes and improves the catalytic activity.…”
