Abdominal Ectopic Thyroid Tissue: The Man From Istanbul

Abstract: Thyroid ectopia is a rare finding below the diaphragm. It is characterized by normal thyroid parenchyma in unusual locations with preserved thyroid marker immunoreactivity. In this article, we present the first known case of thyroid tissue in the periappendiceal fat and discuss possible ethiopathogenic theories.

“…Ectopic thyroid tissue is mainly found as inclusions within cervical lymph nodes, as a sequestered nodule/parasitic nodule, or in soft tissue in the midline, anywhere along its migration path from the primitive foregut to its eventual position in the neck [8,9]. Very rarely, ectopic thyroid tissue can also be found in other locations, including but not limited to the thorax and abdomen [10]. The mechanisms for formation of ectopic thyroid tissue is believed to be related to misplacement during embryonal migration, or heterotopic differentiation in aberrant endodermal tissue [10].…”

Parasitic nodules represent a specific subtype of extra-thyroidal thyroid tissue.…”

“…The other sites of abdominal ET included the duodenum [29], mesentery [30], appendix [31], gynecological organs (ovary, uterus and fallopian tube) [32][33][34] and others. Although few cases of other sites of abdominal ET have been reported, struma ovarii is a noteworthy disease because this condition may be easily misdiagnosed, and determining benign disease from malignant disease is di cult.…”
