Abductive reasoning and qualitative research

Abstract: Abduction, deduction and induction describe forms of reasoning. Deduction and induction are discussed in the nursing literature. However, abduction has been largely neglected by nurse scholars. In this paper it is proposed that abduction may play a part in qualitative data analysis - specifically, in the identification of themes, codes, and categories. Abduction is not, in research, restricted to or associated with any particular methodology. Nevertheless, situating abduction in qualitative research facilitate… Show more

“…After this first cycle coding (Salda na, 2013), in the second cycle coding, two researchers involved in the study repeated reading, reflecting, and validation of codes and categories, moving forwards and backwards between the growing categories and the text. Subsequently, two overarching interlinked themes became evident through a process of abductive analysis (Lipscomb, 2012). Throughout the whole analysis process, the authors compared and discussed the meaning of preliminary codes and categories until consensus was reached.…”

“…The information was audiotaped and transcribed in full after removal of any identifying information. Later, the data were coded on a line-by-line basis using paper and highlighter and analysed using thematic analysis and an abductive approach to describe and explain key concepts that arose from the data 8. Analysis was then performed between different categories and overarching themes were identified.…”
