Radiative lifetimes, accurate to AE5%, have been measured for 212 odd-parity levels of Sm ii using laser-induced fluorescence. The lifetimes are combined with branching fractions measured using Fourier transform spectrometry to determine transition probabilities for more than 900 lines of Sm ii. This work is the largest scale laboratory study to date of Sm ii transition probabilities using modern methods. This improved data set has been used to determine a new solar photospheric Sm abundance, log ¼ 1:00 AE 0:03, from 26 lines. The spectra of three very metal-poor, neutroncapture-rich stars also have been analyzed, employing between 55 and 72 Sm ii lines per star. The abundance ratios of Sm relative to other rare earth elements in these stars are in agreement and are consistent with ratios expected from rapid neutron-capture nucleosynthesis (the r-process).

New radiative lifetimes, measured by time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, are reported for five Rydberg states of singly ionized ytterbium. Free Yb + ions were produced in a laser-induced plasma. The experimental results have been compared with HFR calculations, taking core-polarization effects into account, and a good agreement (within 25%) between theory and experiment is observed for four levels. HFR results are also proposed for np (n 7) and nf(n 8) Rydberg states and compared with available data.

Radiative lifetimes, accurate to ±5%, have been measured for 8 even-parity and 72 odd-parity levels of singly ionized erbium using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) on Er ions in a beam. This new set of measurements is more extensive than earlier LIF sets, and is in good agreement with those sets where they overlap. These lifetimes provide an absolute scale for a large, accurate set of Er atomic transition probabilities. Basic spectroscopic data on rare earth transition probabilities are needed for astrophysical research and for research on lighting products.
