Abrasive Sensitivity of Engineering Polymers and a Bio-Composite under Different Abrasive Conditions

Abstract: Two different test systems were designed to evaluate the tribological behavior of five engineering plastics (Polyamide—PA grades and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene—UHMW-PE) and a fully degradable bio-composite (Polylactic Acid—PLA/hemp fibers) targeted to agricultural machinery abrasive conditions. Pin-on-plate tests were performed with different loads, sliding velocity and abrasive particles. The material response was further investigated in a slurry containing abrasive test system with different sl… Show more

“…The harmonization of environmental and technical requirements is a complex aspect in the selection and development of the applied structural materials. Therefore, in abrasion areas sometimes light and corrosion-resistant polymers [ 10 ] or aluminum alloys are used, even when foamed [ 11 ], but where the presence of mass and strength is essential (e.g., tillage and cultivators), the use of different steels is preferred. Generally, alloyed martensitic steels are utilized in these applications, often with hard alloy coatings to aid the wear resistance [ 12 ].…”

“…Nowadays, many tribological applications are using polyamide and polyamide composites as a better alternative to metallic parts in the manufacturing of the mechanical parts. Weight, cost, and ease of manufacturing are also often considered as additional benefits for using polyamides in composites [ 2 ].…”
