ABS modified with hydrogenated polystyrene‐grafted‐natural rubber

Abstract: Natural rubber (NR) latex was grafted by emulsion polymerization with styrene monomer, using cumene hydroperoxide/ tetraethylene pentamene as redox initiator system. The polystyrene-grafted NR (PS-g-NR) was hydrogenated by diimide reduction in the latex form using hydrazine and hydrogen peroxide with boric acid as a promoter. At the optimum condition for graft copolymerization, a grafting efficiency of 81.5% was obtained. In addition, the highest hydrogenation level of 47.2% was achieved using a hydrazine:hydr… Show more

“…Figure 2 shows the Izod impact strength plotted against the PB rubber content for the different PVC/ABS blends prepared at milling temperatures of 165°C and 180°C. The impact strength of blends increased together with the PB rubber content as expected from previous studies [14,17,18]. At low PB rubber contents, all of the notched impact strength of brittle blends occurred in the range of 50-200 J/m, independent of the type of PVC resin used.…”

“…However, NR deteriorates against ozone, sunlight, and weathering due to the unsaturated in its polymeric chains [4,6]. Thus, chemical modifications of NR are very important in order to enhance the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of NR.…”

“…The main purpose for grafting is to make the fiber hydrophobic and this enhances the compatibility, as well as dispersibility of the grafted fibers in the nonpolar matrices. Grafting of lignocellulosic material such as sisal fiber, jute, kenaf, wool, pineapple leaf, talc, starch and coir has been done successfully using different types of initiators [13][14][15][16][17]. A number of researches were conducted on grafting of palm fiber [18][19][20], however, no work has been done on polystyrene grafted OPFEB fiber.…”
