Abscisic acid crosstalk with auxin and ethylene in biosynthesis and degradation of inulin‐type fructans in chicory

Abstract: The effect of different hormones on fructan accumulation and the genes regulating biosynthesis and degradation is known; however, information on hormonal interaction mechanisms for fructan content and mean degree of polymerization (mDP) is limited. Cell suspension cultures of chicory were prepared and treated with abscisic acid (ABA), auxin (AUX), ethylene (ETH), ABA + AUX or ABA + ETH, then inulin concentration, mDP of inulin and expression of FAZY genes was determined. A low concentration of AUX and ETH incr… Show more

“…As with other fructans, inulin can serve as reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers (Shang et al, 2018). Under stress conditions, abscisic acid (ABA) accumulates in chicory plants which leads to a higher inulin content (Mohammadi et al, 2021). Similar results were observed when exogenous ABA and a high concentration of auxin or ethylene were added.…”

“…Both auxin and ABA promote seed dormancy, and auxin regulates seed dormancy via the ABA signaling pathway (and vice versa) (Liu et al, 2013). Auxin together with ABA New Phytologist (2023) 239: 949-963 www.newphytologist.com modulate insulin levels and the mean degree of polymerization (mDP) in chicory (Mohammadi et al, 2021). However, auxin and ABA inhibit root hair growth, whereas auxin promotes growth and ABA inhibits it in Arabidopsis (Zhang et al, 2016;Rymen et al, 2017).…”

“…Indeed, the hormonal regulation of fructans-metabolizing enzymes was first suggested by Bausewein et al (2012), ABA appears to positively affect reserve of carbon storage in plants and promoting the accumulation of fructans by increasing gene expressions of 1-FFT and 1-SST (Suárez-González et al, 2014;Gasperl et al, 2016). For example, application of exogenous ABA induced an increase of fructans in chicory (Wei et al, 2016), however, in a recent study Mohammadi et al (2021) reported on the hormonal interaction mechanisms for fructan content and their degree of polymerization (DP). Interestingly, the authors noted that inulin DP increased by an application of exogenous ABA which also interacted by changing and adjusting the effect of auxin (AUX) and ethylene (ETH) hormones.…”
