Absorption of Orally Administered Hyaluronan

Abstract: Hyaluronan (HA) has been utilized as a supplement. However, the absorption of orally administrated HA remains controversial. The degradation and absorption of HA in the intestine were investigated in this study. HA excretion into the feces, degradation in the intestinal tract, absorption through the large intestine, and translocation to the blood and skin were examined. HA administered orally was not detected in rat feces. HA was degraded by cecal content, but not by artificial gastric juice and intestinal jui… Show more

“…For a long time, the fact that HA can cross in its “intact” form the intestinal barrier has been debated; recently, a few studies have appeared in the literature to highlight this question. Kimura et al have evaluated the degradation and absorption of HA (300 KDa and 2 KDa) after oral ingestion in rats, demonstrating intestinal degradation to oligosaccharides, which are subsequently absorbed in the large intestine, translocated into the blood and distributed in the skin [248]. Orally-ingested LMW HA has shown the opposite effects: some studies have reported inflammatory properties with the activation of the immune response [249], while other research has highlighted the efficacy in reducing knee joint pain without inflammation [250].…”

“…Using HA hydrogels as tissue analog for stem cells-based therapies are merging as a promising strategy (Loebel et al, 2017 ; Wong et al, 2017 ). Oral administration of HA for the prevention of dry skin was established (Kawada et al, 2015 ; Kimura et al, 2016 ). The use of fragments of HA (35 kDa) was proposed as an additive in infant milk formula promoting intestinal defense (Kessler et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Similar effects have been reported for hyaluronic acid [19, 20]. Hyaluronic acid is thought to be absorbed after being digested into low molecular weight molecules in the digestive tract by the action of intestinal microbiota [21]. Biokinetic tests have shown it is then delivered to the skin and the knee joints [22, 23].…”
