Academic Libraries' Mobile Initiatives and Research from 2010 to the Present

Abstract: An examination of the literature from 2010 to the present reveals a variety of academic library mobile initiatives. In addition to creating mobile library websites, librarians utilized iPads to support roving reference, rounding library services, as well as information literacy instruction. IPads were also offered to patrons for circulation and librarians conducted research to enhance their understanding of students' use of iPads. Articles documented the availability of Quick Response (QR) codes in academic li… Show more

“…The librarians require the language tools and knowledge to use the open source software. Open source is a community effort and sharing of expertise in its use is common among its experts (Blummer and Kenton, 2018). Open source is developed to suit more than a single platform of operating systems and to ensure there is a great support for the app among the software users community (Dahlberg et al ., 2008; Lv, 2012).…”

“…This prototype specifically uses application programmable interfaces (APIs) for user communication and to support two-way interaction architecture: system-to-component and system-to-system connectivity. The prototype was developed in-house by using the open source integrated library system Koha, a system widely used in libraries around the world (Kurkovsky and Meesangnil, 2012; Blummer and Kenton, 2018). The open system architecture prototype allows the services to function 24 × 7.…”

“…Mobile access was appreciated increasingly in library service when the iPhone was released, and especially after Apple Inc. founded the iTunes app store in 2008. Before the iPhone's release, mobile devices in libraries were used primarily in medical librarianship or by medical students, and often focused on personal digital assistants (Blummer and Kenton, 2016).…”

“…5 Most of the literature on mobile-device use in higher education is focused on undergraduates across a wide range of majors who are using a standard academic library. 6 To help provide context for how libraries have designed their websites for mobile users, some of those specific findings will be shared later. But because our study focused on graduate students and faculty in a sciencefocused branch library, we will begin with a discussion of what is known about more advanced researchers' use of library services and their mobile-device habits.…”
