Introduction: Through breastfeeding, the child experiences different stimuli and the interaction established at each feeding and allows the consolidation of feelings of safety, protection and well-being, which are fundamental for a healthy child development. Breastfeeding establishes physical well-being, where the infant feels snug in the mother's breast. In addition to the feeling of protection, contact with the skin also has a positive impact on the child's emotional development, making them calmer and more peaceful. Objective: The present work aims to carry out a bibliographical review based on scientific evidence on the importance of breastfeeding for the health of the newborn. Methodology: This research consists of abibliographical research, which identifies, locates and obtains bibliography on a certain subject that the researcher wants to deepen, uniting the understanding of the authors to their, respective, theories. the following descriptors were used: “breastfeeding”, “newborn” and “health”. There was no time frame and in English and Portuguese. Available free of charge and in full. Results and Discussion: breast milk is a complete food, easy to digest and protects the infant from developing respiratory diseases, infections, diarrhea, reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, celiac, autoimmune, food allergy, among other benefits for the child. The use of exclusive breastfeeding is important and beneficial not only for the child in his physical and psychological development, but also for the mother in her puerperal recovery and prevention of various diseases and problems related to breastfeeding. Final Considerations: This study, in line with other research, presents the importance of BF for the health of the child and his/her mother. Affirmed by many authors as a complete food, there is no need to offer any other food, favoring the healthy growth and development of the newborn.
