Acaricidal activity of petroleum ether extracts from Eupatorium adenophorum against the ectoparasitic cattle mite, Chorioptes texanus

Abstract: In this study, we evaluated the acaricidal efficacy of extracts obtained from the plant Eupatorium adenophorum against the common cattle mite Chorioptes texanus. The results showed that 95% ethanol extracts at concentrations of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25 g/mL (w/v) were highly toxic to C. texanus in vitro, killing 100% of mites in 4 h. Similarly, petroleum ether extracts of E. adenophorum resulted in between 80 and 100% mortality of mites in vitro at concentrations of 0.1, 0.05, and 0.025 mL/mL (v/v) within 4 h. In cl… Show more

“…There is currently no effective vaccine for the scabies mite, and treatments for animals include application of chemical acaricides have resulted in resistance in target species and environmental pollution[31]. Research exploring the immunopathogenesis and allergens of the scabies mite, and host immunological protective mechanisms is warranted as these genes are potential targets for vaccine development or are potential markers for diagnostic tests[12, 31, 32]. …”

“…For example, the compounds in essential oils from this plant were found to be active on antibacterial, antioxidant (Pandey et al, 2014), and antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic virus (Jin et al, 2014). Nong et al (2012Nong et al ( , 2013Nong et al ( , 2014aNong et al ( , 2014b and Liao et al (2014) reported the acaricidal activity of this extract and the active sesquiterpenes. In our previous work, four new cadinane sesquiterpenes, including one compound with in vitro cytotoxicity against the HCT-8, Bel-7402, and A2780 cancer cell lines, had been isolated from the weed (He et al, 2008).…”

“…But it has become a harmful weed of crops, natural environments, and forests because of environmental and ecological damage in at least 30 countries and also is recognized as the most important invasive plant species in China (Nong et al, 2014a). A series of preventive measures against the weed have been executed in the areas of serious damage of china.…”
