The following is a partial list of samples of archaeological interest processed between February 1981 and October 1985 at the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory. The list contains samples from west-central Illinois that were related to projects conducted by current or former researchers at the Center for American Archeology (CAA) (formerly Foundation for Illinois Archaeology) and Northwestern University, Department of Anthropology, or, as noted, by colleagues from other institutions. Although some of the samples reported here came from non-cultural contexts and are primarily of geological significance, all were from or related to archaeological investigations.

dis-eases require substantial population sizes and densities for maintenance (Fiennes 1978:20 From the second century B.C. , a terra cotta figure has been considered representative of leprosy (Grmek 1983:232 Steinbock (1976:197-198), Grmek (1983:291-306), Manchester (1984), and Clark et al. (1987:50-51 Angel ( 1964. 1966, 1967) Stuart-Macadam (1982,1987b Other morphological variants used as occupational stress markers are supinator crests and fossae of ulnae (Kennedy 1983). The hypertrophy of the crests, deepening of the fossae, and "ridging" of the insertion of the anconeus muscle were found in prehistoric samples in males "known" to have used missile weapons such as spears (Kennedy 1983:872 (Figure 2).There are six cases, two left and four right, of unusual pits occurring in femoral heads, superior to the fovea (Figure 3). These have also been identified as osteochondritis dissecans (I. Watt 1984, pers. comm.), although an alternative diagnosis of avascular necrosis has been suggested (D. Birkett 1986, pers. comm.). Eleven left and 12 right tibiae exhibit Osgood-Schlatter's disease. Cranial variation in the terminal Late Archaic of Ohio

Cranial and mandibular discrete traits and cranial metric traits were collected from 99-125 individuals in eight terminal Late Archaic sites. The analysis of ten metric traits in six samples showed that the samples shared the same generalized variance and that sexual dimorphism in the means of the metric traits was greater than inter-site differences. Since these samples share the same size and shape expression of a complex set of polygenic traits, we hypothesize a historical relationship among these samples. Discrete trait analysis showed a pattern of differentiation among the eight samples. This pattern of differentiation is related directly to the geographical separation between samples, and, as with metric traits, cultural differences do not contribute to the pattern of biological differences. The overall pattern of osteological variation in these samples can be summarized parsimoniously by paraphrasing the first law of geography: All of the terminal Late Archaic populations of Ohio were related to each other, but closer ones were more related than distant ones.
