Acceptability and perceived value of urodynamics from the patient perspective: A narrative review

Abstract: Background: The value and application of urodynamic evaluation (UDS) have been a controversial topic in recent years. Gaining robust data on the patient viewpoint in this area is important since, even when UDS findings do not change the management plan, the objective diagnostic information gained from UDS may be valued by patients. Moreover, insights from UDS may empower treating physicians to counsel patients more effectively and manage their expectations regarding treatment outcomes. Objective: This expert n… Show more

“…Multiple prospective trials demonstrated that although UDS does not change surgical outcomes, it still plays an important role as a counseling tool. 3 Up to 20% of men experience ongoing voiding dysfunction following TURP for BOO. 11 Expectation management is an important aspect of high quality patient care.…”

“…For example, UDS instrumentation may lead to symptomatic urinary tract infection in 0.5%–4% of patients 1 and urinary retention can occur in 5% of men undergoing UDS 2 . Although it is controversial that UDS may not change the management of lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS), it nonetheless plays an important role in prognostication and expectation management before urologic procedures—both important aspects in patients’ perceived effectiveness and impact on quality of life 3 . Furthermore, recent randomized control trials and meta‐analyses demonstrate limited utility in performing UDS for the treatment of BOO, and that performing UDS does not reduce surgery rates 4,5 .…”

“…However, the authors also did recognize the paucity of such data in recent literature. 24,25 While UDS provides key sensory thresholds and precise diagnoses, BD offer insight into the daily bladder habits and voiding patterns which cannot be captured with UDS. 26,27 A systematic review from 2006 included 129 studies and evaluated the methods for diagnosing urinary incontinence.…”
