This article presents the findings of a qualitative study exploring the experiences of women living in Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, Argentina, with the use of misoprostol for inducing an abortion. We asked women about the range of decisions they had to make, their emotions, the physical experience, strategies they needed to use, including seeking health care advice and in dealing with a clandestine medical abortion, and their overall evaluation of the experience. An in-depth interview schedule was used. The women had either used misoprostol and sought counselling or care at a public hospital (n=24) or had used misoprostol based on the advice of a local hotline, information from the internet or from other women (n=21). Four stages in the women's experiences were identified: how the decision to terminate the pregnancy was taken, how the medication was obtained, how the tablets were used, and reflections on the outcome whether or not they sought medical advice. Safety and privacy were key in deciding to use medical abortion. Access to the medication was the main obstacle, requiring a prescription or a friendly drugstore. Correct information about the number of pills to use and dosage intervals was the least easy to obtain and caused concerns. The possibility of choosing a time of privacy and having the company of a close one was highlighted as a unique advantage of medical abortion. Efforts to improve abortion law, policy and service provision in Argentina in order to ensure the best possible conditions for use of medical abortion by women should be redoubled.

Background: Management of abortion is an important issue in gynecology. Several millions of spontaneous abortions occur yearly and more than a million induced abortions are performed in the USA. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of misoprostol alone and misoprostol with letrozole in the induction of abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy in the Qazvin city of Iran. Patients and Methods: Seventy female candidates for legal abortion within the first trimester of pregnancy were divided to two groups: misoprostol alone and misoprostol with letrozole. The complete abortion, time to open the internal os of the cervix, time to complete the abortion, and drug-induced side effects of misoprostol and letrozole were recorded and analyzed. Results: The complete abortion rate was 69.7% in the misoprostol and letrozole group and 30.3% in the misoprostol group. Incomplete abortion was 32.4% in the misoprostol and letrozole group, and 67.6% in the misoprostol group (P = 0.004). Bleeding, cervix os opening time, and time to complete abortion from induction of drugs were similar in both groups (P > 0.05). There were no medical complications in both groups. Conclusions: Misoprostol plus letrozole was more effective for inducing abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy compared to misoprostol alone.

Background: Medical abortion has been proved to be effective method for safe abortion. It is highly acceptable to women in a variety of settings, including where resources are limited. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the immediate impact of medical abortion on women's health and clients' satisfaction with medical abortion. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted at Marie Stopes Center, Satdobato, Lalitpur. A total of 100 consecutive women visiting the center for medical abortion during 2010 September to 2010 October were included. Respondents were the women attending follow up visit following medical abortion using Mifepristone 200 mg orally followed by Misoprostol 800µg per vaginal after 24 hours of oral Mifepristone. Structured questionnaire was designed and interview method was used for data collection. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version16 was used to analyze the data. Results: The success rate of medical abortion was 91%. Most of the respondents did not have any problems besides the expected effects and side effects of the method such as bleeding, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and headache. Majority (79%) of respondentswas satisfi ed with medical abortion and 76% respondents said they would recommend this method to others in future. There was no signifi cant relationship between information and counseling and client's satisfaction with medical abortion. Conclusions: The immediate impact of medical abortion on women's health is positive. It is a safe and easy method in termination of early pregnancy and most of the clients were satisfi ed with this method.
