Background: Unsafe abortions is causing about 8% of maternal deaths in India. So, it’s important to use contraception not only for spacing but also to prevent unintended pregnancies. It is well known that fertility is resumed in the immediate cycle following an abortion. Post abortal contraception is very important in preventing pregnancies in the immediate post-abortal period. This study was intended to know the acceptance of post-abortal contraception in women coming for medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) or following spontaneous abortion in tertiary care centre. Thus, it is vital to know the choices made by them, to know the method accepted so that it will be helpful in bringing awareness in those who do not opt for post-abortal contraception. Aims and objectives were to study the acceptance rate of post-abortal contraception. Also, to study the method of contraception accepted.Methods: It was a retrospective cohort study from 2018 to 2020 done in Vani Vilas hospital, BMCRI, a tertiary hospital. A total of 2273 patients were enrolled in the study. Data was collected from both 1st trimester and 2nd trimester abortion patients (spontaneous/induced) from the Comprehensive abortion care register. The acceptance and method of contraception accepted was studied. Inclusion criteria were-women coming to tertiary centre for abortion (spontaneous/induced) to Vani Vilas hospital. Exclusion criteria were-Molar pregnancy and Ectopic pregnancy. Demography, educational status, details of spontaneous or induced abortions, parity and gestational age at abortion, the acceptance and methods of contraception accepted were studied.Results: A total of 2273 patients were included in the study of which 738 were MTP and 1535 were cases of spontaneous abortion. 912 (40.12%) were primigravidae and 1361 (59.87%) were multigravida. Various methods of contraceptives were accepted by 1973 (86.80%) patients, whereas 300 (13.19%) did not opt for any method of contraception. Of 1973 patients,176 (7.7%) underwent sterilization.Conclusions: The acceptance rate of post-abortion contraceptive methods was good. Acceptance of COCs and LARC was almost similar in this study. Immediate acceptance of contraception in the post-abortal period is very crucial in reducing unintended pregnancies and abortions hence family planning services after abortion need to be strengthened.

Background: Women opting for unsupervised abortion pill intake over contraceptive measures shows a lack of awareness about the effectiveness of family planning methods. There is an urgent need to promote awareness and acceptance of various family planning methods. There is an urgent need to promote awareness and acceptance of various family planning methods, especially by the survivors of adverse consequences of over-the-counter use of medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) pills. Methods: The prospective study was conducted at the obstetrics and gynecology department of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi from June 2020 to October 2021. Out of 98 patients reported after unsupervised intake of MTP pills, with complications. 56 patients opted for various methods of family planning, post-abortion after counselling Statistical analysis was done using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) 20.0 software, and results were calculated. Results: Out of 56 patients, the majority were educated, and had education up to primary, matriculation, and above matriculation with 23.21%, 28.57%, and 26.79% respectively. Most of the women belonged to upper- lower class (50%). 53.17% took pills at gestation age between 7 weeks to 12 weeks. the majority had an incomplete abortion (69.64%) with stable vitals. 1 case of uterine perforation, 4 cases of rupture ectopics, and 2 cases of chronic ectopic pregnancy were also reported. Most patients opted for DMPA injectables (44.64%). 23.14% chose other methods of family planning such as barriers, patches, and vaginal rings. 4 women opted for intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD), 5 accepted the use of oral contraceptive pills (OCP) and 9 cases went for permanent female sterilization. Conclusions: Gynecologists and obstetricians have an ethical obligation to ensure that post-abortion contraception, becomes an integral part of abortion and post-abortion care, in view with the recommendations of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and several other organizations. Government needs to take steps to enforce the adoption of various contraceptive methods, thereby decreasing the incidence of unsafe abortion and maternal mortality.

BACKGROUND To increase the incidence of safe and legalised abortions, it is important to know the clients. This study is a 6 years research of the records of MTP performed at the public hospital attached to a medical college, to know the trend, socio-demographic and obstetric status of the women undergoing MTP. The objectives of the study were to find trend, sociodemographic factors, obstetric status and complications of MTPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS A study of the records of all the MTP operations performed at the gynaecology department of the hospital from 2010 to 2016. Data analysis was done on MS excel. RESULTS Most women who underwent MTP were young, sexually active women and had completed 2 child family. Along with MTP, younger women preferred IUCD and elder women preferred Tubal Ligation as contraception. There is an overall gradual increase in the incidence of MTPs conducted which could be attributed to increase in population of the city and nearby areas. CONCLUSION In this study, most of the women preferred MTP after 2 nd Pregnancy and at the age of 21-35 years. Most women accepted permanent method of sterilization after MTP shows that women had completed family by the age of 30 years and had no access to effective contraceptive services. MTPs thus seems to be used as an emergency treatment for failed contraception. This trend should be discouraged but at the same time safe abortion should be legalised to safeguard the health of the women.
