Accuracy of invisalign® treatments in the anterior tooth region

Abstract: The IT-based transmission of mal-aligned teeth into the ClinCheck® presentation provides sufficiently good accuracy. Tooth corrections in the vertical plane were more difficult to realize. A vertical overcorrection in the final ClinCheck®, a case refinement at the end of the treatment or additional measures (e.g. horizontal beveled attachments or vertical elastics) seems useful to achieve the individually intended therapeutic goal.

“…A previous study investigating intrusive and extrusive force applications found that intrusive forces significantly increased RR rates compared with the controls and extrusive forces were not significantly different [22]. In treatments with removable aligners vertical movements are more difficult to perform [19,20,23]. Therefore, they have to be conducted with attachments or other auxillaries like elastics.…”

“…Previous studies showed a high accuracy between the virtual images and the treatment outcome [19,20]. Therefore, the images of before and at the end of treatment were compared and measured by a grid, set with the lowest adjustable scale ranges of 1 mm.…”

“…Disadvantages include reliance on excellent patient cooperation with wearing the aligners, and lack of precise control of force systems compared with fixed appliances. It has been demonstrated that the actual amount of tooth movement achieved is significantly less than what is planned in the initial virtual setup 18,19 …”

“…Although many studies have researched treatment outcomes, 3,5,10,11 the biomechanical mechanisms by which CAT exerts its effects remain unknown, and it is challenging to assess the force imparted by these clear aligners. Finite element analysis has been used to provide quantitative and detailed data simulating the physiological tissue reactions during treatment, 12 but finite element analysis results depend directly on the input data, the accuracy of the model, and the boundary conditions and solution, while the accepted physical property values of the supporting tissues still include many discrepancies.…”
