Accuracy of Ultrasonography With Color Doppler in Ovarian Tumor

Abstract: A quantitative systematic review was performed to estimate the accuracy ultrasonography with color Doppler in the diagnosis of ovarian tumors. Studies that compared color Doppler ultrasonography with paraffin-embedded sections parameters for the diagnosis of ovarian tumors were included. Twelve studies were analyzed, which included 2398 women. The pooled sensitivity was 0.87 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.84-0.90); and the specificity was 0.92 (95% CI 0.87-0.90). The diagnostic odds ratio for ovarian cancer … Show more

“…However, there is no consensus as to which Doppler parameters and cutoff values are the most predictive of malignancy because of the overlap in blood flow parameters between benign and malignant lesions. In addition, conventional Doppler US has inherent limitations, such as inferior sensitivity to slow flow and deeply located blood vessels [5][7]. 3-D power Doppler US provides a new method to evaluate the tumor vascularity.…”

“…The corresponding overall sensitivity and specificity of RMI alone were 68% (95% CI, 63–72%) and 93% (95% CI, 91–94%). There are other second‐line tests with proven efficacy that are relatively easy to perform, for example color Doppler30, but no Doppler data were available in this study. However, future research should evaluate the value of a sequential approach with RMI and HistoScanning that contains Doppler information and compare this with the ‘simple‐rules’ strategy.…”

“…Malignant tumors show a reliance on new vessel formation. Low‐impedance intratumoral flow is usually observed in cases of primary ovarian cancer, and the resistive index is commonly less than 0.4 in these cases 18 . However, a PubMed search showed no earlier studies dealing with the discrimination of low‐ and high‐grade serous carcinoma by conventional sonography.…”
