“…Athletes needed their entire coping repertoire to cope with the more invasive questions and not let them influence their task focus or increase the perception of a performance climate. The negative consequences of the media being perceived as an environmental stressor may be to impose higher anxiety and stress (e.g., Abrahamsen, Roberts, & Pensgaard, 2008) and/or less adaptive coping (e.g., Pensgaard & Roberts, 2003) among the athletes. Clearly, the athletes need help from the coach and the support personnel to create a supportive climate rather than dwelling too much over their media responses and the reported "mistakes."…”
