Achromatic Savart polariscope: choice of materials

Abstract: This paper presents the achromatization of Savart Polariscope to decrease the lateral-shear dispersion in the lateral displacement. The achromatic Savart Polariscope can be made from two different birefringent crystal materials. The achromatic model for the choices of material is presented. The achievements and performances of different achromatic Savart Polariscopes are demonstrated with numerical simulations and ray tracing program. The chromatic variation in lateral displacement can be reduced by an order o… Show more

“…Here the the 1/λ response is dominant, in full agreement with Eq. (4), because in this spectral range the chromatic variation of calcite's birefringence -and therefore, of the beam separation d -is not significant [25].…”

“…The OPD is eliminated as both the polarization components go through a displacement and a stationary process. Note that l is still dependent on λ due to dispersion, which can be solved by using two materials to make SP itself roughly achromatic [19]. Then, the QWP should be replaced by an achromatic light retarder.…”

“…In the last few years, birefringent interferometers have attracted particular attention because of their compactness and insensitivity to vibrations, due to their common-path nature. They are mostly based on Wollaston or Savart prisms [26,27], or their variants [28]; because of the arrangement of their optical axes, they are characterized by a strong chromatic lateral displacement, which reduces the visibility of the interference fringes [29].…”
