Acidic Calponin Cloned from Neural Cells is Differentially Expressed During Rat Brain Development

Abstract: Calponin is an actin-, tropomyosin- and Ca2+ calmodulin-binding protein that inhibits in vitro the actomyosin MgATPase. Basic and acidic variants of calponin have been described to date. Although the cerebral expression of calponin remained controversial for some time, transcripts encoding acidic calponin in the adult rat brain and in cultured cerebellar cells have been reported. In the present work, we report the expression of acidic calponin mRNAs and the isolation of cDNAs encoding the full-length acidic ca… Show more

“…Since acidic calponin is also expressed in glial cells (Ferhat et al, 1996;Plantier et al, 1999; present findings), we first investigated whether the increased labeling intensity for acidic calponin observed in the inner one-third of the molecular layer in pilocarpinetreated animals occurred in glial processes. For this purpose, double labeling for acidic calponin (red) and GFAP (green) was performed in pilocarpine-treated rats at 1 and 2 weeks.…”

“…Acidic (h3) calponin is found in the brain, mainly expressed by neurons [79], astrocytes [80], and glial cells [81] in the actin cytoskeleton with a proposed role in the plasticity of neural tissues [82,83]. Acidic calponin was also found in the post-synaptic side of symmetric synapses and accumulated in the post-synaptic densities of asymmetric synapses [80].…”

“…3 The expression of CaP isoforms is not restricted to muscle tissue, and different members of the CaP family have been identified in a wide range of vertebrate cells. CaP variants have thus been implicated in the regulation of a variety of actomyosin-based processes, including neurite outgrowth (33) and the organization of the nonmuscle cell cytoskeleton (34). The CLIK-23 module may have acquired a specialized function in the course of evolution from invertebrates to vertebrates and the concomitant specialization of different muscle types (see also Ref.…”
