Acidic Ionic Liquids Enabling Intermediate Temperature Operation Fuel Cells

Abstract: Herein we show that protic ionic liquids (PILs) are promising electrolytes for fuel cells operating in the temperature range 100–120 °C. N,N-Diethyl-N-methyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium hydrogen sulfate ([DEMSPA][HSA]), N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium triflate ([DEMSPA][TfO]), N,N-diethyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium hydrogen sulfate ([DESPA][HSA]), and N,N-diethyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium triflate ([DESPA][TfO]) are investigated in this study with regard to their specific conductivity, thermal stab… Show more

“…However, for operating temperatures much higher than 120 °C, the thermal stability of the PIL mixtures is still an issue. In future works, the substitution of [2-Sema][TfO] by another acidic but thermally more stable PIL such as [DESPA][TfO] would further increase the upper operation temperature limit. This would also decrease the release of TfOH during fuel cell operation.…”

“…A more detailed description of the preparation of the N,N-diethyl-3-aminopropane-1-sulfonic acid can be found elsewhere. 39,40 The base-to-acid molar ratio x:y was varied from 1.5:1 to 1:2.5. The water molar fractions of the nonstoichiometric blends were calculated on the basis of theoretical PIL units, e.g., in the case of a blend with a base-to-acid stoichiometry of 1:2, a blend unit B•2 HA is composed of one PIL cation HB + , an anion A − , and one molecule of the free acid HA.…”

“…[ 160 ] PILs like N , N ‐diethyl‐ N ‐methyl‐3‐sulphopropan‐1‐ammonium hydrogen sulphate, N , N ‐diethyl‐3‐sulphopropan‐1‐ammonium triflate([DESPA][TfO]), etc., are good electrolytes for FCs working in the temperature array 100–120 °C. [ 161 ] The combination of two PILs, like diethylmethyl ammonium hydrogen sulphate ([dema]HSO 4 ) and diethylmethyl ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)amide ([dema][NTf 2 ]) was formed by blending in different weight ratios used as an electrolyte for FC. This mixture results in good electrochemical action compared with the pure PILs, hence the work procedure and speed of action of the mixture depend upon the composition of the mixtures.…”
