Acido-thermophilic Bacteria from Thermal Waters

Abstract: Three strains of acido-thermophilic bacteria were isolated from hot-spring waters of Tohoku district in Japan. They were aerobic spore-forming bacilli and identified to belong to genus Bacillus. Their characteristics were as follows. They were acidophilic , and grew well in the pH range of between 2.3 and 5.0. Optimal growth conditions were 65°C for temperature and 3.54.0 for pH of media. Strains T-4 and T-17 required biotin as growth factor, but T-7 did not require any factors for its growth. These bacteria w… Show more

“…The isolates described here have numerous physiological and morphological properties in common with the isolates of Uchino & Doi (1967) and probably are members of the same taxonomic group. The fact that the isolates are Gram-variable spore-forming rods suggests that these isolates should be classified in the genus Bacillus.…”

“…11-1 S was used in this investigation. The bacterium was isolated from water in a Japanese hot-spring by procedures previously d~scribed, 9) and its bacteriological characteristics were as follows: Gram~positive, aerobic, heterotrophic,. obligately thermophilic, acidophilic, and spore-forming rod.…”

“…The enzyme had a pH optimum for activity at 4.0 and its stability range was pH 2.0-6.0 [29]. Similar acidophilic bacteria was also found in Bacillus sp.such as Bacillus coagulans [30], Bacillus acidocaldarius; a new species of the genus Bacillus. [31], and Bacillus acidoterrestris [32].…”
