Acoustic characterization of a miniature matrix transducer for pediatric 3D transesophageal echocardiography

Abstract: This paper presents the design, fabrication and characterization of a miniature PZT-on-CMOS matrix transducer for real-time pediatric 3-dimensional (3D) transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). This 3D TEE probe consists of a 32 × 32 array of PZT elements integrated on top of an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). We propose a partitioned transmit/receive array architecture wherein the 8 × 8 transmitter elements, located at the centre of the array, are directly wired out and the remaining receive el… Show more

“…The formation of physiological vortices within the aortic sinuses of Valsalva is also well known [22] and was first hypothesized by Leonardo da Vinci [20]. In recent years, adult [3,23] and pediatric [1] cardiac MR studies have been focused on the role of altered high velocity, turbulent, helical flow hemodynamics in post-stenotic dilatation in bicuspid aorta, which is now considered not only a genetic disorder but the sum of a genetic disorder and altered flow dynamics [3,8,11,[23][24][25][26][27][28].…”

“…The acoustic characterization is a crucial process in the design of ultrasound transducer arrays [4], [5]. This process is necessary to validate models, analyze variations between transducer elements, evaluate the manufacturing process, and investigate various acoustic phenomena that influence the transducer's behavior in practice [6], [7]. Thus, to develop new and better probes, it is very important to have a good knowledge of the performance of the prototyped transducers experimentally [8].…”
