Acoustic signatures of the phases and phase transitions inYb2Ti2O7

Abstract: We report on measurements of the sound velocity and attenuation in a single crystal of the candidate quantumspin-ice material Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The acoustic modes couple to the spins magneto-elastically and, hence, carry information about the spin correlations that sheds light on the intricate magnetic phase diagram of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 and the nature of spin dynamics in the material. Particularly, we find a pronounced thermal hysteresis in the acoustic data with a conc… Show more

“…9,14 A number of experimental and theoretical investigations into the true nature of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 's ground state described it in widely varying and conflicting fashions: either as lacking 8,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23] or having 7,11,[24][25][26][27] long-range magnetic order, with static 24,26 to slowly fluctuating dynamic [16][17][18][19]21,23,25,28 spins.…”

“…However, in 2016 an experimental result 40 detected, according to authors, structural modifications at temperatures below 1 K, with a first-order transition signature without the existence of changes in the crystalline structure. The other points of the cube of the parameter space of Fig.…”

“…For example, a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state was found in Er 2 Ti 2 O 7 potentially driven by the order-bydisorder mechanism whereas a ferromagnetically ordered state with high sensitivity to small amounts of disorder was observed in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , see, e.g., Refs. [4][5][6] and references therein.…”
