Acquiring a Dataset of Labeled Video Images Showing Discomfort in Demented Elderly

Abstract: One of the effects of late-stage dementia is the loss of the ability to communicate verbally. Patients become unable to call for help if they feel uncomfortable. The first objective of this article was to record facial expressions of bedridden demented elderly. For this purpose, we developed a video acquisition system (ViAS) that records synchronized video coming from two cameras. Each camera delivers uncompressed color images of 1,024 x 768 pixels, up to 30 frames per second. It is the first time that such a … Show more

“…During the present economic recession, it is important that low-cost, effective longterm healthcare be provided for the elderly. As technology advances and more and more useful mobile healthcare services can be conveniently provided [18][19][20] for the elderly through easy-to-use interfaces, MHS will continue to contribute much to improving the quality of long-term healthcare services for the elderly. This research model is suitable for the areas of intergenerational transfer cultures such as China, Japan, Taiwan, and other countries whose social structures are based on Confucian values.…”

“…Still another assessment is the Disability Distress Assessment Tool (DisDAT, [ 9 ]), which requires the caregiver to discern signs of states of being content and in distress. The second type of discomfort assessment involves videotaping PWD with two cameras simultaneously and using specialized software, the Digital Discomfort Labeling Tool (DDLT), to capture the symptoms included in discomfort rating scales [ 10 ]. Finally, there is a protocol for assessment of discomfort which includes a physical assessment (e.g., physical causes of discomfort) and an assessment of agitated behaviors, such as physically aggressive behavior or socially inappropriate behaviors [ 11 ].…”

“…Suzuki et al [20] monitor human respiration and heart beat in a non-contacting way by means of microwave radars. But also video is used for monitoring humans, e.g., Bonroy et al [1] monitor the visual expression of humans using a camera system for pain assessment. This automatic visionbased monitoring can also be a solution for monitoring of epileptic patients.…”
