“…The studies about genetic variability among the Indian populations of Colombia were started by Kirk et al [2]; however, more recently several surveys analysed various ge netic markers in different urban and Amerin dian groups [3][4][5], In Colombia, the genes of the major histocompatibility complex (HLA) have been the subject of four studies, but only three Indian groups, Uitoto, Awa-Kwaikerand Chimila, have been investigated [6][7][8], In 1988 the Universidad Javeriana launched a 5-year programme 'Expedición Humana' in which several Amerindian groups have been simulta neously studied for immunogenetic markers specially for the HLA-A, B, C and D loci. The present study reports the frequency variation among five Amerindian populations, three in habiting the northeast border between Colom bia and Venezuela (Yuko, Tunebo and Bari), while the other two (Guane and Paez) occupy a more central region of the country.…”
