Action Potential Modulation of Neural Spin Networks Suggests Possible Role of Spin

Abstract: Abstract Abstract In this paper we show that nuclear spin networks in neural membranes are modulated by action potentials through J-coupling, dipolar coupling and chemical shielding tensors and perturbed by microscopically strong and fluctuating internal magnetic fields produced largely by paramagnetic oxygen. We suggest that these spin networks could be involved in brain functions since said modulation inputs information carried by the neural spike trains into them, said perturbation activates various dynamic… Show more

“…Although published reviews, criticisms or comments on this theory are negligible to non-existent, it is well received at conferences and in private communications by some physicists and the like. Two more papers on the same subject were also published in this electronic journal, NeuroQuantology (Hu & Wu, 2004a;2004c).…”

“…In the brain, spin-networks were pictured as electron-unpaired electron spins that represent pixels, collectively forming a "mind screen" that is known to be highly sensitive to fluctuating internal magnetic fields and action potentials. Such perturbations were considered to modulate neural dynamics, but also could enhance synchronization and stochastic resonance as have been noticed in brain (Hu and Wu, 2004). The particular spin chemistry bridges classical neural activity, serving as input via the magnetic influences on biochemical processing.…”

“…The present essay is not intended to cover QM theories exhaustively but rather to distill salient features and sub-theories that have contributed to the mind/brain debate. More detailed reviews have appeared recently (e.g., Vannini and Di Corpo, 2008;Hu and Wu, 2004;2008;Tarlaci, 2010;Pereira, 2003;Meijer, 2012;Meijer and Korf, 2013;Tuszynsky and Woolf, 2006;Bruza and Busemeyer, 2012).…”

“…It was mentioned in a paper [206] that there was significance of microscopically strong and fluctuating internal magnetic fields produced largely by paramagnetic oxygen in brain function. This was able to produce stochastic resonance to synchronize dynamics to the neural firings.…”
