Actions monitoring as an alternative to structural rehabilitation: Case study of a river bridge

Abstract: Summary A number of river bridges collapse worldwide every year during flood events, due to combination of actions including traffic loads, water and wind load, riverbed degradation, and accumulation of debris. Incidence of failure is higher for relatively old bridges that may have been designed without adequate consideration for some of such actions, in particular the scour potential at piers and abutments; in this case, consolidation of bridge foundations may be required. As an alternative to structural reha… Show more

“…e main motive of the experiment is predicting the deflection so that the model of the parameters should be considered using the Bayesian approach [107]. Ballio et al have carried out bridge management to Borgoforte bridge to monitor the complete response of the bridge such as wind, water, debris flow, loads due to traffic, possibility of scour at the pier, and other damage possibilities [108]. e predictive analysis supports businesses and suppliers in enhancing the performance and resistance of buildings to dynamic loads.…”

“…Different emergency responses are activated when an "extreme" value is measured or when a previously determined threshold is surpassed. One such approach is described in Ballio et al [77], who use several deterministic evolution scenarios of the safety conditions of a structure with a clear threshold between them. These scenarios are: Normalcy (no critical situation is foreseen); Alert (situation is evolving to potentially critical); Warning (situation may become critical); and Severe warning (structure is at its limit condition, collapse may happen at any time).…”

“…Within the next months, the complete SHM strategy will be implemented involving a data-driven approach to remove the effects of environmental factors from measured rotations, whereas the scour influence on the bridge will be conceivably detected from classic novelty analysis [9] of the tilt residual errors, as well as from echo-sounder measurements. This hybrid system may not prevent future damages of the structure [10]; however, it can be of crucial importance to address maintenance and repairing operations.…”
